File sharing win98 xp
Once determined, open My Computer by double-clicking the icon on the desktop. The available drives should be visible in the My Computer window you just opened. Either right click on the drive that you would like to setup for file sharing, or double click the drive to find the folder that you would like to file share from, and right click on that folder.
You should see a menu appear. Look for Sharing A window will appear with the button labelled Not Shared selected. Click on the button next to the Shared As: option to activate the text boxes. Under the Access Type: section, select Depends on Password. Click OK. All of the computers that need to participate on the network should have their network components and settings setup and installed properly.
There are two types of computers when printer sharing. Originally posted by Crazy The win98 machine will never see the Xp if your using NTFS but you should be able to share folders on the win98 and see it on the xp. Click to expand The win98 machine and the Xp box are both plugged into a Linksys router. The 98 machine accesses the internet just fine, as does the XP box Its got something to do with it being windows 98 lol.
I'm having the exact same problem. Also connected to that router is a Windows98 machine, hardwired. When I go to add a network printer or location, I can see the machine, just it wont expand to show the printer or location.
Anyone got any clue? Having identical problems This I know is all simple, and mine still didn't work until I reinstalled all the above on my Win 98 machine. I think the Win 98 network files were screwed up because I had initially tried to let XP "Create the network", which is a big "No, No" on all the networking websites and apparently can change and screw up the settings on your entire network.
It initially told me that the Win98 Machine had the wrong Driver, so I downloaded the XP driver and installed it on the WinXP laptop, and then it recognized the printer and tried to print, but now returns an error message that it can't print file. It's really great to read these posts and share the same anguish, if anyone figures out the problem entirely, please post it and I'll do the same.
Rightclick the printer you want to share, and click on Sharing Did you mark the printer as "Shared"? The problem is that Windows 98 does not Beacon properly.
This means that the Windows 98 will probably be able to see files and even printers on a Windows XP machine. It is a problem with Windows 98 in all reality. Try to look at shared files on the Windows XP machine through the Windows 98 mahine. If you can do this, try attaching the printer to the XP machine just for fun and see if you can print to it from the 98 Machine. If you can, my recommendation is that you upgrade to Windows XP for Both. I'll bet it will work then.
Thanks a ton in advance. I like full control of system but win share degrade it much. Its about choice Direct connection, easy to setup. Karl Gechlik First off you will need to make sure both computers are on the same subnet. If they are both getting their ips from your router you should be good. Next create a user on the windows 98 machine with the same username and password as the user on the xp machine. Then make sure you share the folder and give this user permissions. The easiest and simpler way is to activate your guest account, it will allow you to share your winxp with other computers but of course is not as secure.
Sorry I'm not in the mood to write long direction to make more secure. I will try to get you a link that I have replied to someone something similar to this but with more details. For this example, User: Nico Pass: asdf. Go to the Sharing tab and select "Share this folder".
Why is it people blame Microsoft for the user's own lack of knowledge? If you are unable to figure something out, there is always MSKB. All this technical stuff just to link a network from 98 to XP It's soooo simple without having to do all the admin crap, create accounts and so on Simply share what you want to share, making sure it's shared with FULL access rights Make sure file and printer sharing is enable on both,,,,, reboot,,,,do a search on both PC's for the other PC, and drag and drop the icon for that PC it finds into your network places folder
