The codes for subdivisions are represented as the alpha-2 code for the country, followed by up to three characters. Names and codes for subdivisions are usually taken from relevant official national information sources. ISO is regularly updated to reflect changes in country names and subdivisions. The numeric country code is assigned by the UN. Some of these districts straddled the border between two provinces. The constitution established a division into 46 district municipalities and 6 metropolitan municipalities. Again, three of the district municipalities lie partly in two provinces each. It coincides with the part of Transkei that used to lie within Natal. This exclave was apparently eliminated under the 12th and 13th amendments to the Constitution of South Africa.
